Picatinny and dovetail rails for optic mounting

Rail standard decides what mounts to your optic and how securely it stays. Before you specify a scope mount, rings, or stabilization bracket, you need to know which rail interface the host platform uses. Here is the practical difference between the three standards you meet most in the field, and how to avoid the costly mismatch that puts an optic in the wrong footprint.

Picatinny (MIL-STD-1913)

Continuous, evenly spaced recoil slots. Any Picatinny mount fits any Picatinny rail, and the consistent slot geometry gives repeatable indexing. The default choice for new builds and the most common interface requested by distributors and OEM importers. Cross-slot spacing is standardized at 5.23 mm centre-to-centre, so accessories swap between hosts without re-zeroing surprises.

Weaver

Similar profile to Picatinny but with wider, non-standard slot spacing. Weaver mounts often fit Picatinny rails, yet Picatinny mounts do not always seat on a true Weaver rail because the slots are positioned differently. If you are sourcing for a mixed legacy fleet, confirm the rail type before quoting – a small dimensional difference becomes a return.

Picatinny rail and dovetail adapter

Dovetail (11 mm, 3/8″, and 9.5 mm air-rifle)

Dovetail rails are common on rimfire, air-rifle, and older European optics. They have no recoil slots – the mount clamps the tapered rail directly. The catch is width: 11 mm, 3/8 inch, and 9.5 mm air-rifle dovetails are not interchangeable, and dovetail-to-Picatinny adapters are the usual bridge when a distributor needs one SKU to serve both worlds.

Which one to standardize on

For new B2B programs, Picatinny gives the widest accessory ecosystem and the cleanest repeatable-zero story. For legacy or air-rifle lines, plan for dovetail adapters rather than forcing a conversion. The practical rule: match the mount to the rail in hand, keep a small adapter line for cross-platform coverage, and never assume “close enough” clears recoil.
